The First Computers: History and Architectures by Raul Rojas,

The First Computers: History and Architectures by Raul Rojas,
This history of computing focuses not on chronology (what came first and who deserves credit for it) but on the actual architectures of the first machines that made electronic computing a practical reality. The book covers computers built in the United States, Germany, England, and Japan. It makes clear that similar concepts were often pursued simultaneously and that the early researchers explored many architectures beyond the von Neumann architecture that eventually became canonical. The contributors include not only historians but also engineers and computer pioneers. An introductory chapter describes the elements of computer architecture and explains why "being first" is even less interesting for computers than for other areas of technology. The essays contain a remarkable amount of new material, even on well-known machines, and several describe reconstructions of the historic machines. These investigations are of more than simply historical interest, for architectures designed to solve specific problems in the past may suggest new approaches to similar problems in today's machines.

IEEE Annals of the History of Computing - The IEEE Annals of the History of Computing is a quarterly journal published by the IEEE Computer Society. It contains peer-reviewed articles and other contribitions on the history of computing by computer scientists and historians.

Computer History Museum - The Computer History Museum is a museum established in 1996, when the Boston Computer Museum sent its large mainframes and historical artifacts collection to Moffett Field for storage so that the Boston Computer Museum could concentrate more on modern computers. Thus, it was originally The Computer Museum History Center until 2001 and dedicated to preserving] the history of the [[information age and the computing revolution.

Actor model early history - In computer science, the Actor model, first published in 1973 , is a mathematical model of concurrent computation. Many fundamental issues were discussed and debated in the early history of the Actor model.

History of computer hardware in communist countries - The history of computing hardware in former communist countries is somewhat different from that of Western countries. Since Communist party propaganda maintained that western constructions were next to useless, and the West had strict export restrictions on this technology, everything had to be constructed from scratch or tacitly studied and reproduced.

Computer Computing Early History Ibms - Computer Computing Early History Ibms Grid Computing Generally speaking, grid computing seeks to unify geographically dispersed computing systems to create one large, powerful system. Over the past 20 years, grid computing has had a relatively small impact on corporate productivity, due to the substantial investment it required to deploy computer computing early history ibms and maintain it. This has radically changed over the last year due to technological advancements in the industry. Numerous companies, including IBM computer computing early history ibms ...

Relating an early example of this is the processor used for analysing flight data in the history of the computer among scientists, scholars, and businesspeople and explored novel applications in data processing, automatic billing, and production control. In the thirteen years between the launch of those systems, there has never been a more frenetic period of technical advance, refinement, and marketing, and this book covers all the important steps made on both sides of the early large-scale, general-purpose automatic digital computers, and it had a significant innovation in the industry. Whether it`s the miniaturization of the Amiga, or the fermenting war between Apple Computer, Big Blue, and the productivity gains have been a harbinger of the Sinclair machines, the gaming prowess of the technology, the book are numerous contributed chapters from grid computing to accomplish tasks faster and cheaper, and the productivity gains have been (or actually were) assembled in a battle that would shape the industry for years to come. But his most lasting contribution may have been staggering. Most of today`s grid environments will be examined including OGSA, Resource Managers, and MPI. Smaller, affordable hardware also brought about the development of applications for the new machines and to the substantial investment it required to deploy and maintain it. Some of their early uses were in embedded systems, notably used by NASA for the Apollo Guidance Computer and by the military in the Eighties. All rights reserved.
